Three Quarto Books Listed on the Notable Social Studies Trade Books for Young People 2017

Three Quarto Titles have been selected as part of the Notable Social Studies Trade Books for Young People 2017 in the US. This annual cooperative project of the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) and the Children’s Book Council aims to gather “an annual reading list of exceptional books for use in social studies classrooms, selected by social studies educators.”

The selection committee looks for books that emphasize human relations, represent a diversity of groups and are sensitive to a broad range of cultural experiences, present an original theme or a fresh slant on a traditional topic, are easily readable and of high literary quality, and have a pleasing format and, when appropriate, illustrations that enrich the text.

We are very proud to have the following three titles selected on the list:

Quarto Author Peter Dazeley Awarded The British Empire Award

Author of Unseen London and London Uncovered published by Frances Lincoln, an imprint of The Quarto Group, Peter Dazeley has been awarded The British Empire Medal in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list for his services to photography and charity.

The British Empire Medal is described by as “Awarded for a ‘hands-on’ service to the local community. This could be a long-term charitable or voluntary activity, or innovative work of a relatively short duration (3 to 4 years) that has made a significant difference.” And is part of the Queen’s Honours system.

The system recognises people who have, made achievements in public life, committed themselves to serving and helping Britain. They’ll usually have made life better for other people or be outstanding at what they do.

From Dazeley’s success as a photographer he was able to give back to communities by donating his time as a photographer, to a variety of different charities. In his career he has guided and inspired the young through his mentoring in photography and  has also donated his skills to charities in support of their campaigns. Described as ‘the working class gong’ the British Empire Medal prize trophies long term commitment to charities.

Now at the age of 68, Dazeley is still working hard and can look back with great satisfaction at what he has achieved. He will be meeting the Queen later on this year to receive his award. 

Breaking Vegan author featured in Kohl’s holiday promotion roll-out

For the first time, Kohl's specialty department store has partnered with six leading experts in the industry to share inspiring wellness tips and product recommendations, showing families how fun and easy it is to make their move toward a healthy lifestyle.

The cascade of information will include multiple consumer and fan touch points, including Facebook Live feeds, in-person workouts, demonstrations and more.

The wellness ambassadors include: Jordan Younger, the blogger behind the wellness and lifestyle blog “The Balanced Blonde” and is the author of the finding-balance memoir Breaking Vegan. She has emerged as a leading voice in the space due to her authenticity, unique voice, passion for all things wellness and relatability. Jordan's tips and advice will guide families on how to start small on their healthy eating journeys.

The Quarto Group Announces Changes to Senior Leadership Structure

LONDON, 20 July 2016 – The Quarto Group (LSE: QRT) is pleased to announce the following Leadership appointments, effective from 1 January 2017 and reporting to Marcus E. Leaver, Chief Executive Officer of The Quarto Group:

Ken Fund, currently President & CEO, Quarto Publishing Group USA, will become Chief Operating Officer of The Quarto Group.

In this new global role, Ken will lead the company’s commercial management. In addition to leading global Publishing Operations and global IT infrastructure and systems, Ken will now lead the Sales teams and be tasked with exploring new distribution channels and markets.

Ken has over 30 years of experience in the publishing industry and has been a successful, trusted and respected leader of Quarto for over 15 years. Prior to joining Quarto, Ken held several leadership positions at Dino DeLaurentiis Productions, Simon & Schuster and Harper Collins San Francisco. Ken is a graduate of SUNY Oswego and holds an MBA in Finance from Pace University.

David Breuer, currently Director, Quarto International Co-editions Group, will become Chief Creative Officer of The Quarto Group.
In this new global role, David will lead the creative management of the business.

David joined Quarto in 2011. A graduate of Oxford University, he has worked for the art publishers Phaidon Press and with André Deutsch. He was Managing Director of the art publishers and bookshop chain Zwemmer, Commercial Director for the Royal Pavilion, Art Gallery and Museums of Brighton, and was for 15 years the Chief Executive of Royal Academy Enterprises organizing the business activities of London's Royal Academy of Arts. He is also the founder of Iqon Editions.

David Inman, currently Managing Director, Quarto Publishing Group UK will become Managing Director, Quarto Partners.

In this newly created role, David will manage our new entrepreneurial business, Quarto Partners. He will have ownership of Quarto’s distribution services across the US and the UK, with an objective to develop further distribution and partnership agreements. He will also manage Quarto’s international joint ventures and look for opportunities for growth around the world, in both English and foreign language. 

David first joined Quarto as Sales and Marketing Director in 2009 before returning as Managing Director of Quarto Publishing Group UK in 2013, following a period with Templar Publishing. A graduate of Cambridge University, David began his career with Macmillan Publishers. In 1990, he co-founded TV tie-in publisher Boxtree which grew from a start-up company to an £8 million business, prior to its later acquisition by Macmillan. He then held several senior management positions with Hachette Illustrated in Paris and Octopus Publishing.

Quarto Foreign Rights, People and Communications will continue to report to CEO Marcus Leaver.

Recipe from Ferment Your Vegetables Nominated for a 2016 EDDY Award

Amanda Feifer's "Bull's Eye Beet Kvass" recipe from her book, Ferment Your Vegetables, has been nominated for a 2016 EDDY Award. Award winners will be announced June 15.

The EDDYs celebrates editorial excellence among nearly 90 publishers of Edible Communities covering the local food landscape across the U.S. and Canada. A panel of 50+ esteemed judges selected the finalists, visitors to vote for Readers’ Choice winners from among their nominees.

Feifer writes about food fermentation of all kinds on her blog, When she's not concocting crazy vats of bubbly things in the kitchen or ranting against the use of anti-bacterial soaps, she's doing what she loves most: teaching people to make their own fermented foods, from kimchi and kefir to kombucha and koji. In addition to being nominated, she was selected to be a judge for the 2016 Edible Communities EDDY Awards.

Here's the nominated recipe.


4 large Chioggia beets (4 pounds)
2 organic, preferably unwaxed, lemons, quartered
8 inches ginger, unpeeled, chopped
1 tablespoon coriander seeds
4 bay leaves
2 allspice berries
4 juniper berries
Up to 1½ tablespoons kosher salt, to taste (optional)
9 cups filtered water


  • Remove the crown and greens from the beets and reserve for another use. Trim any unattractive bits of root and any soft spots, but leave beets otherwise unpeeled.
  • Cut each beet into quarters or eighths, but make sure the pieces are at least 1 inch thick. Scrub and quarter the lemons. Place the ginger, coriander, bay leaves, allspice berries, juniper berries, and salt (if using) into a 1-gallon jar, add the beets and unsqueezed lemon wedges, and pour in the filtered water to fill to 2 inches below the rim. Place the lid on your jar but don’t fully tighten it so that carbon dioxide (a natural product of the fermentation process) can escape.
  • Leave it to ferment at room temperature for 7 to 10 days. Give the jar a little swirl every day to prevent surface yeasts from forming. Once you’re happy with the acidity and flavor, strain the liquid into a clean jar, cover and chill before drinking.

Four Quarto Authors Nominated for The Readable Feast Cookbook Awards

BOSTON — Four Quarto Publishing Group authors have been nominated for cookbook awards at the first annual The Readable Feast festival in Boston, MA.

Nominated authors are Andy Husbands (Wicked Good Burgers), Katie Chudy (Superfood Sandwiches), Kate Weiler (Real Fit Kitchen), and Morgan Morano (The Art of Making Gelato).

The Readable Feast, a cookbook festival celebrating local talent, will take place at the Boston Public Market, Boston’s indoor, year round marketplace for locally sourced groceries and specialty agricultural products, on June 17-18, 2016. The Cookbook Awards Ceremony & Cocktail Party will include foods prepared by local celebrity chef cookbook authors, including Andy Husbands (Tremont 647,Sister Sorel, and Smoke Shop), as well as specialty cocktails with local distillers, local beer and wine. A juried committee of established cookbook experts will give awards in six categories of cookbooks and books related to food written by New England authors, or books devoted to a New England food subject. The “People's Choice Cookbook of the Year” will also be awarded based on online voting by cookbook fans across the region.

The Readable Festival will feature a stellar line-up of free cooking demonstrations and seminars, pairing cookbook authors with industry experts and Boston Public Market vendors to share techniques and wisdom. A Boston Cookbook Sale and Signing Lounge will feature titles by Readable Feast participants, as well as new releases and time-tested favorites. Seven Quarto Authors Among Judges for 2016 EDDY Awards

Five Quarto Publishing Group authors will be among the judges for the 2016 EDDY Awards. The EDDY Awards are a celebration of excellence in publishing—from food writing to coverage of social issues to exceptional photography and more. The awards celebrate the voice of independent publishers covering local food, season by season.

Fair Winds Author Tells Today Show How Vegan Diet Nearly Killed Her

Jordan Younger, founder of popular vegan blog The Blonde Vegan and author of Breaking Vegan , told NBC's Today Show she became so obsessed with eating healthy that she actually became unhealthy: Her hair was thinning and her skin was turning yellow when she finally decided to ease her self-imposed dietary restrictions. Doctors say the vegan diet can be healthy, but when multiple food groups are eliminated from the diet, meeting daily nutrient requirements can be challenging.
